Weird Mars

John Prisk - Weird Mars

A work in progress.
This one is going to be "vintaged" out when all is said and done. The header of "Weird Mars" may change if I think of anything more pulpy...

Vintage Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing - John Prisk

Faux-vintage of course, but it looks somewhat convincing, no?
I've liked the character ever since I got some old issues illustrated by the great Bernie Wrightson when I was a kid. This was drawn kinda small in a sketchbook, so it suffers a little from scale, but I thought it would look cool as a vintage cover...

Childhood Hero

Flotsam and Jetsam - John Prisk

"...Grab a gun and shoot into the dark to save my life. Didn't know what I had done 'til I turned on the light..."

As the copy suggests, this is an homage to the band Flotsam and Jetsam and their tune Childhood Hero, off the album Dreams of Death. The whole album tells the story of a kid/guy who is afraid of what he does (thinks he does) to others when he falls asleep...
Childhood Hero seems to be the impetus of the characters problems. He, in the course of a nightmare, is awoken suddenly by his father who is subsequently shot by the boy as he is in a state where he can't quite yet discern dream from reality...

Unnatural Selection

Flotsam and Jetsam Unnatural Selection - John Prisk

An homage to a band I really like, but their one album I couldn't stand, unfortunately...

After Brad Wright

John Prisk - After Brad Wright

A little thing I did as an homage to artist Brad Wright. He does some crazy cool stuff and you should check him out if you get the chance...
Anyway, this is me, tipping my hat...

Coloring is Fun

Kids Stuff - John Prisk

Kids Stuff - John Prisk

Kids Stuff - John Prisk
At the behest of my niece, I did some stuff for her to color.
She wanted bunnies, kitties and dragons... I'm still working on the dragons.

Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider - John Prisk

Ghost Rider has always been a Marvel character I thought had a ton of potential, but was never quite used/applied right (in my opinion). There's been some cool stuff, but this character could have had a much greater story arc thus far...
Anyway, it's another W.I.P.

Three Days of Darkness (W.I.P.)

A work in progress. Based on the Testament song of the same name.
There is more rendering, coloring and texturing along with an additional element I have yet to doodle up for it...

Farewell, My Lovely

John Prisk - Raymond Chandler's Farewell, My Lovely

Based on the Raymond Chandler hard boiled detective novel of the same name.

The story revolves around Philip Marlowe, an L.A. based private detective (center) as he investigates a variety of interrelated situations. Situations which involve, among others, Moose Malloy (left) and his lady friend Velma (right) for whom he is desperately searching, and a whoooole boatload of crime and corruption.

Farewell, My Lovely

John Prisk - Farewell My Lovely

The lines for a little thing based upon the Raymond Chandler book of the same name, featuring his hard boiled pulp detective, Philip Marlowe.
Colors to come.

Aliens

John Prisk - Aliens

A re-working of a slightly older piece, redesigned to be reflective not of just the Alien franchise, but of the movie Aliens (the second in the series) in particular.

Admittedly, while I wanted to do this as an homage to Aliens, I used the tagline for the first movie on the franchise, Alien.  Mostly because it's a bitchin' tag line.

Empire

John Prisk - Queensryche - Empire
Yeah... A lot of art based on music these days, and especially a lot based on Queensryche tunes.
Colors to come...

Anarchy X - Redux

John Prisk - Anarchy X

This is a reworking of the piece found HERE.
In the end I felt the previous version was a little too busy and I didn't like how I had ultimately rendered Dr. X.
This version, I feel, better represents the musical interlude on which this image is based.

Stargate - Children of the Gods

John Prisk - Stargate Children of the Gods
A remake of a piece I did some time ago. The last one was a bit awkward and unbalanced. With this one I hope to create a more unified piece with eye appeal (and less busy junk in the image).

Dead Girl Superstar

John Prisk - Dead Girl Superstar

Based on the Rob Zombie tune, Dead Girl Superstar.

The Dark Knight

John Prisk - The Dark Knight

Every now and again I like to fiddle around with the "less is more" concept.
Simple shapes, outlines and back-lit high contrast figures can make for some dramatic imagery.
I recycled the background clouds for this from another image. I may redo them entirely here in the near future as I have a new idea for how I'd like to see them rendered in the image...

Big Cat Diary Deuce

John Prisk - Big Cat Diary

Another take on a logo for the program I so enjoyed. It was such a fantastic documentary series. My first homage to the series can be seen HERE.

From the Maasai Mara in Kenya, Africa, the series was widely known as "the original wildlife soap opera". Perhaps that is not a description the producers of the show would like, but the show itself was quite dramatic and the narrative provided by the commentators went a long way towards reinforcing the drama.

Over all it was a thoroughly entertaining and enrapturing series.

Check out some of it HERE!

The Bruce Partington Plans

John Prisk - The Bruce Partington Plans

Based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle short story of the same name.
I LOVED this one; well rounded, developed and fairly action packed for one of his shorts. All in all an A+ story.
Read it.
Love it.
Come back and thank me.

See No Evil

John Prisk - See No Evil

Based on the (really lousy and entirely cliche) movie of the same name. Though a pedantic and thoroughly uninspiring endeavor the huge wrestler guy that is in the film (surprise, surprise, he plays the creepy bad guy) is a pretty intimidating presence. He really should be creepy and bad in more stuff... But better stuff...

Anyway, colors to come.

Children of the Gods

A little something' somethin' based on the Stargate SG1 franchise...

The Sign of Four

John Prisk - Sherlock Holmes The Sign of Four

If you haven't read it, do so. I highly recommend it.

Native Blood

John Prisk - Native Blood

Soooo...
I'm not really happy with how this one turned out. It's not really what I had envisioned when I started it. As such I think I'm going to be re-doing this one sometime soon...

Based on the Testament song of the same name. Their front man, Chuck Billy, is native American himself from the California Pomo Tribe. As a result the band has done a number of tunes about being a native American.

David Fincher's Zodiac

John Prisk - Zodiac

A pretty good film that suffered from a terminal case of fact-itis.
If you want to know what I mean by this comment, follow this link, and read the article(s).
Anyway, I'm almost done with this movie poster homage. I just need to get the copy on there and it'll be all done...

Indiana Jones

John Prisk - Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Sphinx

...and the Secret of the Sphinx, by Max McCoy.
It's  not a great book. In fact I felt it was profoundly lacking. But I felt it had a lot of potential and it did do a good job at creating some imagery.
As such I wanted to do this little homage.

Native Blood (W.I.P)

Based in the Testament song of the same name, off of the album Dark Roots of Earth.
Chuck Billy, Testaments lead vocalist, is himself Native American and they do the occasional tune about the topic. This particular song is about personal empowerment and becoming bigger (spiritually speaking) then ones transgressors.

The Devil in the Deep

John Prisk - Devil in the Deep

"That is not dead which can eternal lie,
and with strange eons even death may die."
--The Necromicon

Cthulhu work in progress

Some details of the finished ink. Now I need to scan it in and fill in some of the flat blacks and full colors in photoshop.

The Beastie in the Pit

John Prisk - Into the Pit

I just really wanted to draw a monster. So I drew a monster.
Colors to come.

Electric Crown

Aaaaand yet another piece based on a Testament song. I've got the ink on, very minimal ink as this is another high contrast image based on color and shape and only minimally on detail.

Next: color!

Alone in the Dark

John Prisk - Alone in the Dark
"...Where the Demons are Torturing Me..."

An homage to the classic thrash tune Alone in the Dark by one of the very few metal bands I still like,  Testament.

The version I've linked to (A re-recording off the album First Strike Still Deadly) was not sung by Chuck Billy but rather by Steve "Zetro" Souza, formerly of the band Exodus. Steve sang on this re-recording because, at the time, Chuck was undergoing treatment for throat cancer (from which he has fully recovered).

Anyway, enough of the thrash metal history lesson...

Monsters

A pencil drawing from my sketchbook. I like how it turned out so I'm gonna ink 'er in and then throw some digital colors on...

'Ol James Howlett

John Prisk - Wolverine

So this is the color scheme I finally settled on. I felt that the original color scheme was just too intense, too much, so I decided to dilute it down a bit.
Wanna see the other version? Just ask and I'll post it. Otherwise (while I may post the original at some point anyway) this is the one I'm going with.

Works in Progress

          John Prisk - Wolverine

A lil personal project I'm working on of that 'ol crazy Canuck, Logan. I wanna do one for all of my all time X-Men: Wolverine, Colossus, Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Beast and of course Professor X.

Big Cat Diary

John Prisk - Big Cat Diary
Done.
*SIGH*
I really liked this show and I wish they would A) produce more episodes and B) make the episodes they did produce available in the bloody United States...

Big Cat Diary W.I.P.

John Prisk - Big Cat Diary

Work in progress - finally drew the leopard and the cheetah.
Now it's all about the colors...

Skeletor

John Prisk - Skeletor
...From The Masters of the Universe.

This is part of a larger poster. The background is just there to fill the space and wont (at least I'm not planning on it) be part of the finished piece...

My version of his costume is a little different than the original. The changes I made are pretty minimal, but I gotta admit that I like mine better.

Moonraker

John Prisk - James Bond Moonraker

Done.
Here's a link to the last state of this I posted (last year).

Vintage Spidey

John Prisk - Vintage Spiderman

Aaaaaaaaannnnnd done.
As stated earlier I wanted to combine the older cover designs of my youth with more modern lines. I "vinteged" her out in photoshop to add to the vibe.
