The Cursed... Page One

Page one for the Heros End chapter 9 The Cursed Can Never be Broken.
I dig drawing space scenes - sooo much fun.
Anyway, from start to finish this took about 6 and a half hours or so - maybe a shade closer to seven.
I still need to add the letters.

Choke

I was thinking about something that could be a cool t-shirt design when I did this.
Pencils, inks and digital color took about 4 and a half to 5 hours total.

Aw, Crap...

I was at work reading a HellBoy graphic novel entitled Weird Tales on my lunch break and was admiring the simplicity of the covers.
Their designs are very effective.
Anyway I did this in some free time.
Pencils, inks and digital flats took about 4 and a half hours total.

Heros End Cover Deuce

Well I doubt this one will be used, but I liked the idea so I did it anyway.
Again this was done with the Young Avengers Comic Book Club in mind for their project Heros End. As I'm sure one can guess it is another team-up chapter featuring Wolverine and Venom.
Even though this one probably wont be used it was worth doing because it was fun.

Wonderland Lost

Done just for fun - I dont even really know what the Mad Hatter looks like as I have never seen Alice in Wonderland and I wasn't close to the internet when I sketched up this little guy.
It's simply mad I tell ya...

Head Case (A Bit Frigid )

An idea I put together sort of quickly.
An idea born out of my struggles to understand the effect of modernity on people (not just the fairer sex.)
The female form just lends itself better to the interpretation of being stripped bare. Not just nude, but naked (as Dr. Karen Klinefelder would say).
It's somewhat unrefined as I didnt spend the requisite amount of time doing the drawing of the figure.
Further work is needed to flesh out this idea.

Between...

... a Rock and a Hard Place...
Don't miss the silhouette of the little guy lying on the ground behind the Jade Giant.
Pencils and inks took about 4 hours. Post digital colors were about 3 hours.

Heros End Prep Sketch with Inks

So here's the prep sketch with inks.
The aspect ratio is 2:3 which is a standard comic ratio.
I'd really like to re-draw this one in a larger format to beef up the details a little bit.
Depending on whether or not the kids like this one or not I may just stick with this one. It still looks pretty cool even though it was drawn at only 8 x 12...

Heros End Cover Prep Sketch

This is a prep sketch for a cover I am doing for a friends project with a comic book club he set up within the Boys and Girls Club.
He is working with the kids to get them interested in art and drawing. As such he is working on a graphic novel with them. This particular chapter is a crossover story with the Hulk and Hellboy that revolves around an adventure in the Himalayas, The Abominable Snowman and aliens!
Sound fun?
You bet.

I do prep sketches like this a lot when I'm doing something formal - it allows me to work out the good ideas from the bad ones and when I do the full sized drawings I basically know exactly what I'm doing.

Click on the title of this post and it'll send ya on over to the blog-site that was set up for the comic book club this work is for.

Glandular Freak Show

Because these days comics are a showcase for them. That and like I said before, fat guys are fun to draw.

Crimson Kahzmatek (Monster Contest)

This was my entry into Deviant art member Inzekkts monster contest. The character is one of her original ideas and she asked a bunch of Deviant artists to participate in the little contest.
First prize is only a 1 year Deviant Art subscription but it is totally worth it.
It was a fun project to do to take my mind off other things.
Being that her character (called the Crimson Kahzmatek) is a raging alcoholic I felt it only fitting I have it drinking a blood martini.
If you click on the title of this post it should redirect you to Inzekkts journal describing the contest.
From pencils to inks to digital post work it took just under 6 hours in total to finish.

HellBoy Storyboard

These are pages 2-4 of a five page Hellboy storyboard I am working on for my comic book portfolio.
I've done a lot of work lately that I felt was pretty sub-standard but I am quite happy with the way this turned out for the most part.
Pages one and five will be coming soon to a computer screen near you.

More in the Series...

... Of hand drawn stains I am working with. Over all the work is for digital printmaking and on top of being studies in formalism they are a bit of a commentary on how the digital process is viewed by very traditional print makers.
These turned out much better then the previous attempts. These seem much more organic and real as the previous ones (which can be found HERE) had the look and feel of "comic bookie" style images. They are a little over the top in a sense while these have a more natural feel to them.

No Fear

Despite the claims of the girls shirt to the contrary, I do believe she and her youthful companion should probably be very afraid.
From pencils to inks this one took me about 4 to 4 and a half hours in total to reach this stage.

Ancient Egypt

I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to my fascination with ancient Egypt; all of the art and culture capture my imagination like no other.
This particular drawing is not based on any specific historical figure. Shes just a composite of several famous female Pharaohs in a totally fictitious way of course.
The half buried statue of the Pharaoh next to her is no one in particular, though I should mention I gave the statue my face.
This is another one that would really benefit from some bad-ass colors. I'm just not good enough in that area (because of my color blindness) to color this in the way I have it imagined in my head.
Drawn at about 14 x 17 from pencils to inks it took about 3 and a half to 4 hours to finish.

What?

"What?" you ask...?
"I just thought it was sorta funny." I says.
Done on a lark without much attention paid to detail, the pencils and inks took maybe an hour total.

Nasty little beastie...

Just more fun with random style monsters and what not. I feel the colors on the little phallic like monster guys in the back could be WAY better - I'm going to work on beefing that up.
Over all it's fun in a "run for your life" kinda way.
Drawn somewhat small-ish at about 8.5x14, from pencils to inks to digital junk it took about 4 hours to do, give or take.

Minions

Not much to say about this one - it started off as a self-portrait (the profile in the foreground is my profile) and rapidly turned into something else.
I figure hey, EVERYONE can always use more minions...
Drawn at about 14 x 17 (give or take a little) and between pencils, inks and digital colors it took about 4 and a half hours in total to get to this point.

The Nebule... DEUCE!

This is another photo manipulation of burning coals. I took the picture at The Mirage coffee house in mid-town Long Beach. As a result I named it The Mirage Nebula. Again I used the same photo of the stars I got from The Astronomy Picture of the Day website. This time however I also added in a picture of the moon I also took with my camera phone.
I used photoshop to put it all together.

I wish I had the specific link so I could properly credit those responsible for the photograph of the star cluster Messier 67 (Messier after Charles Messier who cataloged hundreds and hundreds of objects in the night sky). I believe it was a Hubble image but I could be mistaken about that.

The Nebule...

of my mind....
This photo manipulation was made from some images I had taken with my camera phone
(of all things). It was pictures of some glowing ash in my friends backyard fire pit. It just struck me as being very nebulous so I used them and an image of a star field I had gotten from The Astronomy Picture of the Day website ( http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html ).
After some manipulation and photoshoping I put the various images together to create what I called The Herbold Nebula in honor of the friend whos house I was at when I took the pictures and had the idea.
